In our culture, Generally, Amavasai is considered an important day, especially in Tamil Nadu and other South Indian states. Amavasai comes once in every Tamil month based on the moon’s cycle and usually happens every 29.5 days.
As we all know on Amavasai day there will be no moon on the sky. But do you all know the meaning of Amavasai? In Tamil, "Ama" means "no" and "Vasai" means "moonlight." So, "Amavasai" means "no moonlight."I’ve shared this meaning because many people might not know what Amavasai actually means.
On Amavasai day, many of us perform rituals called Tharpanam for our ancestors who have passed away. On this day, we offer food and prayers for them, believing it brings peace to their souls.
Many people, especially elders, still follow rituals like observing fasting on Amavasai or going to temples. Some also go to holy rivers or seashores to perform these rituals.
Generally, people consider Amavasai as inauspicious for starting new things, weddings, or family functions. But spiritually speaking, Amavasai is seen as a powerful day. That's why in many Lord Shiva temples, Amavasai poojai is conducted.
Thai Amavasai, Aadi Amavasai, and Purattasi Amavasai (also called Mahalaya Amavasai) are especially important in Tamil tradition. These Amavasai days are strongly connected with ancestor worship.
