In Tamilnadu and kerala, Thiruvonam is a prominently observed auspicious day. As per Hindu Calendar, it is one of the 27 nakshatras (stars). Thiruvonam nakshatra is considered as a star of Lord Vishnu (Perumal). Especially on this day devotees worship Lord Vishnu.

Importance of Thiruvonam:

  • It is believed that worshipping lord vishnu on this day remove obstacles and bring prosperity.
  • Also this day is connected with legend Mahabali Chakravarthi and Vamana Avatar.
  • In Kerala, Onam festival is an important festival.
  • Tamilians also celebrate this day with devotion and poojas.

Thiruvonam Fasting and Rituals:

  • Prepare required items for pooja like lotus, Lord vishnu’s Images, ghee, jaggery, payasam.
  • Devotees wake up early, take a bath and start the day with spiritual focus.
  • Some people may observe saltless meals fasting, some may observe no meals fasting depends on their health.
  • As soon as Thiruvonam nakshatra begins special poojas are performed at home for Lord vishnu.
  • Offer the payasam made with rice, dal, ghee and jaggery in the pooja.
  • Chanting “OM NAMO NARAYANAYA” 108 times is highly auspicious.
  • Sing/read Vishnu Sahasranamam or Thiruppavai with devotion.
  • After the pooja share the offered payasam among the family members.
  • Giving food, clothes, books in charity is highly encouraged in this day.

Important Notes:

  • During the fast avoid non-veg food, spicy items and quarrel or arguments.
  • Auspicious events like vishnu homams, house poojas, installation of statues can be initiated in this day.
  • In the evening perform deepa aaradhana (Lamp worship), offer Tulsi garland to lord vishnu can be done.
